Our Rating Methodology

At CanadaLoyalty, we believe in transparency. We don't just "guess" which programs are best—we use a data-driven framework to evaluate every program across four key pillars.

1Point Value & Earning Potential

We calculate the "Estimated Value per Point" (EVPP) for every currency. We look at how many dollars you need to spend to earn a reward and compare that to the cash value of the redemption.

  • Base Earn Rate: How many points per $1 spent on average?
  • Bonus Categories: Are there 5x multipliers for groceries or gas?
  • Sign-up Bonuses: How much "free" value do you get just for joining or getting a card?

2Ease of Use

A program is useless if it's too hard to use. We test the mobile apps, the website interfaces, and the "friction" involved in everyday earning.

  • App Quality: Is it fast? Does it show your balance accurately?
  • Automatic Earning: Do you have to "load offers" manually every week (like PC Optimum) or is it automatic?
  • Customer Support: How easy is it to fix a missing point claim?

3Redemption Flexibility

We value programs that give you choices. Can you use points for travel, groceries, gift cards, or cash?

  • Transfer Partners: Can points be moved to other programs (like Amex to Aeroplan)?
  • Blackout Dates: Are there restrictions on when you can use your points?
  • Minimum Redemption: Do you need $100 worth of points to use them, or can you use $1 at a time?

4Coverage & Ubiquity

Where can you actually earn these points? A program only works if the stores are near you.

  • Store Network: How many locations across Canada?
  • Regional Balance: Does it work as well in the Maritimes as it does in BC?
  • Partner Ecosystem: Does the program have partners outside of their main brand?
